Study finds children are more irritable if they play with iPad for long periods of time, experts recommend reducing the frequency

A study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that children who spent 75 minutes or more a day in front of an iPad screen at age 3 and a half were more likely to have outbursts of anger and frustration a year later. A year later, they may be spending more time on their iPads, gradually turning them into a self-absorbed, angry child.

The study’s author, Caroline Fitzpatrick, a professor of child development at the University of Sherbrooke in Quebec, told CBS Evening News that giving children an iPad won’t immediately prevent parents from having tantrums, “but in the long run, It appears that repeated use of this strategy does not allow children to develop strong internal emotion regulation skills.”

The study’s findings are based on a survey of 315 parents of preschool children in Nova Scotia, Canada. Participants reported on their children’s iPad use when they were 3 1/2 years old, and one year later when they were 4 1/2 and 5 1/2 years old.

Foreign media said that some Apple fans have found that giving their children irritable iPad screen will be of great help without causing any obvious harm.

Atlanta mother Farrah Butler occasionally allows her 3-year-old son, Oliver, to play with her iPad, especially when she needs a break or wants to do something (like make dinner). “It’s helpful when you have other things to do,” Butler said. She and her husband found that Oliver and his two siblings didn’t mind having their phones and iPad screens away, “they would Find something else to do with your time.”
