Samsung seems to be developing an expandable foldable laptop design after its foldable mobile phone. According to a patent application on the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) discovered by foreign media 91mobiles, this laptop looks similar to an ordinary notebook, with a screen and keyboard on the front. What makes this device special is its expandable foldable laptop design that allows the screen to be used like a scroll, expanding for more display space when needed.
This patent was submitted as early as June 1, 2020, and made public on July 16, 2024. However, this new product looks like an improved version, considering a patent for a similar design was filed in December 2018. In 2019, the design was publicly announced by the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO).
Samsung seems to be working on a new laptop design with an expandable screen. This will be another application of its flexible screen technology. According to the patent description, the laptop has a regular screen on the front, but there are also two screens/panels that unfold from the left and right sides. These screens can be folded when you’re done using them.
When fully unfolded, the notebook offers an ultra-wide aspect ratio, allowing more content to fit on the screen. Patent images show that the new version appears to have curved edges compared to the previous flat panel. The images also suggest that the two screens on the left and right sides will be secured by some kind of hinge mechanism. The mechanism allows the screen to be fixed at certain angles, such as fully open or half-open like a book.
