Microsoft's Copilot+ computer game performance has been questioned and many popular games are incompatible

According to the Wall Street Journal, Microsoft’s new Copilot+ computer game performance, which is designed to provide ultra-fast performance, all-day battery life, and other advantages for AI tasks, has not performed well in games.

Microsoft's Copilot+ computer game performance has been questioned and many popular games are incompatible

The Copilot+ computer features a Qualcomm Snapdragon chip based on the Arm architecture. This chip integrates the CPU, GPU, and neural processing unit. However, using Arm-based chips creates challenges similar to Apple’s Macs. Many PC games are designed for x86 chip architecture and won’t run on Copilot+ computers. About 15% of laptop users are gamers, and Microsoft users are not used to these issues.

To address Arm architecture limitations, Microsoft developed Prism, similar to Rosetta 2 on Macs. It allows x86 apps to run on Arm-based Windows machines but has flaws. In a test of 1,300 PC games, only half ran without glitches, stuttering, or startup failures.

Some games with anti-cheat software, like Fortnite and League of Legends, cannot be converted to Arm. As a result, even less graphically demanding games fail to launch. Unfortunately, there is no quick fix for this issue at the moment.

Back in June, reviews of Copilot+ computer game performance highlighted issues with Prism. The Verge reported that Premiere Pro was “almost unusable” on the Copilot+ computer. Additionally, rendering projects in Blender was described as “terrible.”

Games also faced major problems. Shadow of the Tomb Raider kept crashing, while Destiny 2, Starfield, Halo Infinite, and Fallout: Knockout failed to launch.

Microsoft told the Wall Street Journal that graphically demanding games may not run well on Copilot+ computer game performance. While the company aims to improve the gaming experience, it advises players to choose a different device for high-performance gaming.
