According to reports earlier this week, many users found that their M4 iPad Pro was unable to turn on after updating to iPadOS 18. After discovering this problem, Apple has urgently withdrawn updates for affected iPad models and is working hard to fix the vulnerability.
Apple’s internal memo shows that the vulnerability affected “a small number” of M4 iPad Pros, causing them to fail to start after upgrading to iPadOS 18. The company instructs technicians to try a force restart first. If that doesn’t work, they should consider replacing the device. However, Apple has not provided a clear timeline for the fix. For now, M4 iPad users who haven’t updated to iPadOS 18 are advised to stay on iPadOS 17.
Other iPad models do not seem to be affected. Relevant updates are still available for those devices.
Affected users reported that their iPads suddenly shut down during the upgrade process and could not turn on. Some were unable to restore the software through a computer. One user shared, “I took my iPad to an Apple store. They confirmed it was completely bricked. They said it needed to be sent to an engineer before they could replace it with a new one, even though I purchased AppleCare+.”
iPadOS 18 introduces a new home screen interface that allows icon customization. It also adds features like math notes, smart handwriting, and real-time audio transcription. For the first time, the iPad includes a calculator app and game mode. However, the vulnerability has caused inconvenience for some users. Apple is working quickly to resolve the issue and restore normal device functionality.
