[Tinydeal News]On May 24, Canalys data showed that shipments of personal computers (desktops, notebooks and workstations) in mainland China fell by 24% year-on-year to 8.9 million units in the first quarter of 2023. Business activities have recovered after reopening, but businesses and consumers spend on computers remains conservative. Among them, shipments of desktop computers (including desktop workstations) fell by 28% to 2.8 million units; shipments of laptop computers (including mobile workstations) fell by 22% to 6.1 million units; shipments of tablet computers rose against the trend, with total shipments increasing by 38% year-on-year to 6.5 million units.

Lenovo is still ranked first among Chinese personal computer manufacturers, but shipments fell by 24% in the first quarter of 2023 to 3.3 million units. Huawei performed strongly this quarter, with personal computer shipments rising 34% to nearly 1 million units, ranking second. Third place HP shipments fell slightly at 7%, and the manufacturer once again reiterated its commitment to listing China as an important sales and manufacturing market. Dell's personal computer shipments among the top five Chinese manufacturers fell the most, with a decrease of 45%, ranking fourth. Asus ranked fifth with shipments of 700,000 units.

In terms of the tablet computer market, driven by event promotions and various new products from manufacturers, the market performance was relatively resilient, with a year-on-year increase of 38%. Xu Ying said: “With the launch of tablet products with more diverse products and prices, tablet penetration in China is increasing. Manufacturers are currently improving their performance in production and work through continuous innovation, including the use of keyboards and stylus accessories, equipped with applications that support work and learning. Through these initiatives, tablets are strengthened in the strategy of a broader device ecosystem and can support manufacturers to fully grasp the needs from the consumer, business and education sectors in the future.”

Apple is in the leading position in the tablet market, with shipments reaching 2.5 million units, more than doubled. Huawei's tablet shipments rose 23%, reaching 1.1 million units. However, as other local brands continue to launch and expand product series, Huawei faces more severe competitive pressure. Honor and Xiaomi ranked third and fourth, with year-on-year growth of 66% and 13% respectively. Lenovo ranked fifth with shipments down 3%, making it the only manufacturer among the top five tablet manufacturers that saw a year-on-year decline.
