Apple's new Mac mini design sparks controversy; power button location is too uncomfortable

[ Tinydeal Technology News]Last night, Apple released a new M4 version of Mac mini, which not only brings powerful performance upgrades, but also some details in the design also triggered heated discussions among users. In particular, the new position design of the power button has caused some inconvenience to many users.

Compared to the previous M2 Mac mini, Apple has moved the power button on the new Mac mini from the back to the bottom. According to Apple’s official website, the button isn’t directly under the base. Instead, the cooling vent supports it slightly raised on the bottom left rear. Apple didn’t highlight this design in the conference video or advertisements. However, you can see it in the detailed pictures on the product page.

This design change means that users must reach the bottom of the Mac mini to press the power button. If they use the new Mac mini in a small space, they may need to slightly lift or tilt the device to reach the button each time they start or restart it.

In contrast, the power button on the previous generation M2 Mac mini is located on the rear right side. It sits next to the power supply and other interfaces. Users only need to operate from the back of the device, and the keys are within easy reach. Although this design also requires pressing from the rear, it does not require moving the device and is more convenient to use.

This design change caused users to question convenience. Some netizens said that Apple’s design has always focused on simplicity and beauty, but excessive pursuit of simplicity in appearance may sacrifice some functional convenience. The design of the new Magic Mouse charging port located at the bottom of the mouse has caused controversy, and now the location of the power button of the new Mac mini seems to be the focus of controversy again.

Apple has not explained why the power button is placed at the bottom. However, some industry insiders believe the design helps with the device’s heat dissipation needs. Despite its small size, the Mac mini’s high-performance M4 chip generates significant heat. Moving the buttons to the bottom may be to optimize the internal layout and improve heat dissipation efficiency.
